"I am secretly afraid of animals.... I think it is because of the usness in their eyes, with the underlying not-usness which belies it, and is so tragic a reminder of the lost age when we human beings branched off and left them: left them to eternal inarticulateness and slavery. Why? their eyes seem to ask us."      - Edith Wharton

Are You Looking For a New Pet?

Take your time, review the resources offered on this Web site and others. The resources listed here are but a few of the many that provide information about breeds of dogs and cats and other animals. And please . . . Learn all you can about adopting a pet that needs a good home before considering making a purchase from a breeder.

While you are looking for a new pet:

  • Network with other pet owners (via internet email lists, surfing, dog parks, etc.) to locate resources, learn from their experience, and build a support system
  • Read up on behavior and training methods, and in the case of dogs, find a local kennel or training club where you will be able to take your puppy for "kindergarten" and obedience training - and observe a few sessions
  • Find a veterinarian, read up on feline, bird, amphibian or puppy/dog care, nutrition, grooming, etc.
  • Plan the pet related "spaces" in your home - indoors and out, and, perhaps, toward the end of this time begin to purchase supplies (i.e., leads, collars, a crate, toys, bedding, tanks, cages, grooming equipment, etc.)
  • Spend some time and search the sites with pets that are waiting to be adopted.

If you have decided to get a dog, take your time and examine the incredible variety of canines large and small, short-haired, long-haired , and wire-haired; active and sedate; loving and aloof; strong, loyal, and independent or soft, cuddly, and intuitive; sloppy and prissy; dignified and silly.

There's a breed for everyone -- all that remains is to examine your own wants and needs and match them with the breed that captures your mind's eye and your heart.
